NoviFlow Demonstrates Innovative SDN Scale-Out BGP Router at the Carrier Network Virtualization 2015 Conference

New SDN based router is easier to scale and far more economical to operate than traditional routers

NoviFlow Inc., a global leader in high-performance SDN networking technology, today announced that it will be demonstrating its ground-breaking SDN based Scale-Out BGP Router at the Carrier Network Virtualization 2015 Conference. This demonstration leverages Software Defined Networking (SDN), and specifically the OpenFlow 1.3/1.4 protocol, to build a new category of switches and routers that, whilst being fully functional and reliable, are centrally controlled via software. As a result, they are much easier to scale and far more economical to operate than traditional "monolithic" routers.

According to NoviFlow President and CEO Dominique Jodoin: "Conventional solutions for network routing are not keeping up under the onslaught of exponentially rising traffic, radically evolving usage patterns and the need for more network agility and real-time response to changing conditions and application requirements. Traditional chassis-based routers are too rigid to scale, too inflexible to repurpose and just plain too expensive to upgrade. The move to a "disaggregated" architecture has already delivered enormous CAPEX and OPEX savings to the compute and storage elements of the network. Now NoviFlow is pioneering the disaggregation of the routing and switching elements by leveraging its Network Processor based technology and the OpenFlow protocol."

The Scale-Out BGP Router leverages SDN and OpenFlow 1.3/1.4 to enable the disaggregation of the traditional monolithic router into its component elements: applications, control plane, forwarding plane and backplane fabric. Doing so delivers the same cost advantages as have already been obtained by the disaggregation of compute and storage elements of the network:
- Use of the most cost effective delivery platform for each element, facilitating SDN and NFV deployments for maximum price/performance
- Reduced CAPEX and OPEX and elimination of vendor lock-in by using COTS (Commercial-off-the-shelf) hardware instead of expensive proprietary gear
- Reduced overprovisioning and increased agility by making it possible to scale each element independently and to react dynamically to changes in network usage.

"This SDN-based Scale-Out approach generates significant savings in both CAPEX and OPEX, as well as providing a more scalable, modular, flexible and programmable routing infrastructure far better equipped to deal with exponential growth, changing usage patterns, and the challenges of deploying innovative new services," adds Jodoin. "By using high-performance NoviFlow NoviSwitch products as part of the Scale-Out Router, network managers can ensure that the solutions they deploy run on a mature, full-featured, carrier-grade OpenFlow forwarding plane proven in commercial deployments around the world, one that will gracefully scale as demand grows, and that can be easily upgraded as SDN, NFV, and OpenFlow specifications evolve."

NoviFlow will be demonstrating their Scale-Out BGP Router solution at CNV 2015, held on December 1st and 2nd at the Crowne Plaza in Palo Alto, California, and invites all interested parties to come visit them at booth #14.
